Because our lives and the lives of others have been touched by HIV, we walk strong.
Because it’s our opportunity to stand up and be counted, we walk strong.
Because all of us have or will be touched by HIV, we walk strong.
AIDS WALK Charlotte, in its 22nd year, is one of the largest HIV awareness and fundraising events in the Carolinas and is Charlotte’s visual representation of the commitment and care we give to those living with HIV and those that are at risk. Strong and caring individuals will lace up their shoes to walk through the heart of uptown Charlotte in celebration of the past, present, and a HIV free future.
The walk is the signature fundraising event for RAIN, which has served those living with HIV and those at risk since 1992. RAIN’s mission is to ensure access to quality, personalized care in a nurturing environment for individuals and their families who are living with HIV and associated chronic conditions so they may live healthier fulfilled lives. Through education and advocacy, RAIN promotes disease prevention, understanding and dignity for those affected by HIV and for those who are at risk. RAIN enables HIV positive people to live their lives to the fullest potential.
- RAIN’s youth clients currently have a 65-70% viral suppression rate at any given time (the CDC notes just over 15% of all youth ages of 18-24 on medication are virally suppressed). Viral suppression is critical for limiting the spread of HIV.
- Through RAIN’s certified ACA (Affordable Care Act) specialist 146 individuals enrolled and are to receive private insurance.
- Through our partnership with the Mecklenburg County Health Department 121 people were tested at our office in 2017.
- RAIN’s PrEP program (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis) linked 90 individuals to access this medication that can reduce the risk of contracting HIV.
The walk is almost 2 miles long and takes the average person roughly 30 minutes to complete. There is a morning program to kick-off and a closing celebration will follow after the walk. Water is provided for free to all registered walkers. AIDS WALK Charlotte is a family affair (kids and pets are welcomed) and open to all who want to participate.
All funds received from this event are tax deductible. Click here if you need a copy of RAIN's 501 (c)(3) status.
